Eurostar on Friday Morning

Wow! What an adventurous day!
Starting at 6:30am I was fully prepared (somewhat..) for today's trip to London when my Downton Abbey ringtone woke me. Mom and I had a somewhat hectic time leaving Paris with delays at the Eurostar and big crowds but we actually ended up getting on an earlier train!
The train ride was lovely, the landscape looked a lot like Wisconsin actually. We made it safely here, had an excellent lunch at a "take away" place, got to make the adventurous walk down to Earls Court and we are now pretty bushed. I also finished reading "Everyday" by David Levithan which I enjoyed.

Cheers from London!

Louvre and d'Orsay on Thursday

Today was another unforgettable day in Paris with my mom. We have so much fun together, I am so lucky!
After a late bite to eat in a café we walked to the louvre. Honestly the experience was so amazing I don't even know what to say right now. I will say that when I saw the Mona Lisa I cried and I'm still not fully sure why that is.
Afterward we went to the Musée d'Orsay which was fantastic. If it hasn't been for Mom we might have missed it. There we saw a huge collection of works by Van Gogh, Monet, Pissaro, Degas, Renoir, and Manet. It was incredible! We had a delicious lunch in their fancy restaurant where the cute waiter was very charming. After we collected our post cards we came back to the hotel, packed our bags, went and had delicious soup and chicken and beef stew and seriously the best mashed potatoes of my life. We also walked down and saw the Eiffel Tower all lit up at night.
Paris has been a treasure trove of memories that I will cherish. Mom and I have had such a whirlwind adventure being here and it brings a smile to my face! Tomorrow we will be in London (I can't believe it, can you?)
Merci Paris,
Meg ( 24/1/13 9:30pm)

Our first few days in Paris!

Bon jour!
Hello from Paris!
I am sitting in the hotel. Across the street there are French business men in French suits making French business calls in French. To my left is the shopping district where women all bundled in furs are buying Dior and Gucci. Below me the sound of fast moving cars and mopeds.
The flight went pretty well, despite the fact that I felt not-so-good and was supposed to sleep the whole flight and barely caught two winks. When we landed in Paris there was snow on the ground, which apparently is strange for the end of January. I didn't think anything of it, go Wisco! After carting our luggage through the airport (which had hamster-cage-esque ramps and escalators) we had a little confusion finding our shuttle car. Once we finally fond it we were speeding through the gray and gloomy Parisian highways. It wasn't until we got closer to our hotel that I started to relax.
After a little mix-up with our reservation and a ride in Paris' smallest elevator, we were finally settled in a beautiful room with a view of the shopping district. We grabbed lunch at the hotel- I had a club sandwich. Every tourist restaurant in Paris had a club sandwich on the menu. That night we really just relaxed in the room. Mom worked on her knitting and I watched some comfort movies on my computer: Parent Trap and Tangled. I'm very glad my dad told me to bring some DVD's with me, they reminded me of home, familiar things. To be honest that night was not as great for me as I had hoped, emotion wise. Don't misunderstand me, I was beyond thrilled to be in PARIS!!! with my mom, but that is when it really hit me that this wasn't just vacation- I had moved to Europe.

It is our second day in Paris and what an adventure it was! After breakfast in a cute cafe near the Louvre, we took a bus ride through the city. The weather is freezing, I hope one day to visit paris in the spring or summer. After the bus we took a river cruise down the Seine. We got to see amazing views of Notre Dame, plus being along the river reminded me of one of my favorite movies, An American in Paris. Then we took a taxis to the Eiffel Tower. I am not a huge fan of heights so I am proud that I went up. We had a wonderful lunch in the Eiffel Tower, and that is when my spirits really started to lift. In Paris with my Mom, what an amazing trip we are on. Then we went and saw the beautiful Notre Dame from the inside. I'm not sure of what my religious beliefs are but you don't have to be religious to appreciate that magnificent space. It has such a peace and calm to it. A feeling I've never felt anywhere else.

I am so happy to be here with my mom and having a wonderful time!

Ciao,
Meg

Hello from Chicago!

Bon jour!
It is just after 4pm in Chicago, Il. Mom and I are sitting in the "big shot" United club room sipping water from fancy glasses, charging our phones and eating our snacks. Like true Wisconsin women we brought enough snacks with us to feed an army, or as my brother said, "If the plane goes down people will come after you and your snacks first!" So far today has been wonderful, by any standards but especially travel standards.
- My morning was pleasant. I fell asleep while watching the Office (US version), woke up and took a long shower.
- After watching the President speak, Beyonce and Kelly sing, and playing with my adorable dogs, Mom and I made our way to the airport.
- Parking, Check-in and security went well despite me looking kind of dumb- coat and liquids in one hand, laptop iPad and shoes in the other. I was a bit of a nervous wreck, which is a bit strange for me because I'm used to flying a lot domestically. Today is just a big day!

To sum it all up I am very happy to be here nice and early, relaxing before what I foresee to be an excellent adventure :)

Cheers/Ciao!

Two days to go!

Bon jour!!
Today is Saturday, the last saturday of sitting at home with my adorable dogs, Callie and AJ, before I head of to my exciting European adventures!
Later today I hope to post a packing video on this post, also so you can see my hair cut!

I can't believe how much stuff I'm trying to fit in one suitcase. My Mom and I packed it on Thursday but now I think we have to take everything out and repack it again. Hopefully eliminate some of the bulkier items but at least I'm still under the weight limit! I have all of my errands finished which included going to Walgreens (3 times..), going to the mall to buy jeans (3 times, haha), getting a haircut, dentist, doctor, getting a new fun pair of glasses, post office, etc. But I did have some lovely breaks in between all of that like having lunch with my Aunt and my Grandparents (Hi!), watching a movie with my highschool buddies Jacob and Maggie, and of course skyping my Ripon friends Brooke, Jordan, and Karlyn (which will become a regular occurrence). This is all happening really fast! I am a little overwhelmed but I know the butterflies will go away once I get there.

I hear Mom downstairs talking to the dogs so I should probably go for now.

Ciao!

One week to go!

I leave for Paris in a week from today...

AHHHHHHHHH

I'm very excited.

Now here is some music....

http://8tracks.com/megayn-a-tron/devoted-love

In addition to being excited I'm also very nervous which I'm convincing myself is completely normal. I guess when I decided to join this program it seemed like forever off in the distant future... and now it is actually right around the corner. I know Mom and I are going to have a wonderful time. We have never really had a trip just the two of us and it makes me feel a lot better knowing she'll be there to help me get settled.

I'm nervous about making friends on this trip. I know that friends are not my main priority, really to be honest this trip is just about me. I want to learn to be comfortable on my own. I've always been the type of person who surounds myself with people, not really wanting to be alone. Some have mentioned to me before that sometimes I put the wants and needs of others before myself in a not-always-healthy way. I hope this semester in Europe will direct me academically but also just prove to myself that I can do this.

Ciao!

Two weeks to go!

I leave here (Wisconsin, my beautiful snow-covered-Culvers-eating-Packer-loving Home) for Paris in two weeks.

All I can think about right now is how much laundry and cleaning and packing I have to do before then.

Ciao!

20 Days

20 days until I leave the states.... HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Fireworks over the London Eye
New Years in Florence
Yesterday was the first of many shopping trips to get me prepared for my semester in Europe.
I bought my suitcase which hopefully will be large enough for all of my excursions and treasures that I bring home with me!

I also got a wristband pedometer that tracks your steps, meals, exercise and sleep- starting yesterday afternoon I walked 3,497 steps. Last night it took me 16m to fall asleep, I slept for 7h 34m (2h 53m of that was deep sleep). Hopping for more deep sleep tonight!

I'm now watching the Rose Parade with my mom, a New Years Day tradition!

Ciao!
